Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

While Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS representative noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge directed the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out staff reductions.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse limits the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
