Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
