Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
