A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind targeting locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
